On the Trail During Spring Break

By

The Places I Went

Beginning on Wednesday, April 16, the school district where I work began its Spring Break. I had been doing pretty good at getting my daily steps in, but I knew that without planning walks during days off it might be harder to achieve.

I decided to take a walk each day at a different location.

Day 1: Wednesday

Katellen Trail, Bushkill Township, PA. I wrote about my experience last week.

During my hike, it was rocky terrain, I took 8,070 steps covering 3.28 miles over one hour and thirty four minutes.

Day 2: Thursday

On Thursday I took another trail in Bushkill, Township, PA right off route 512, the Bushkill Township Trail.

This trail was a very nice nature trail. It was reasonably flat and I took it South to Sober’s Run, which connects with Jacobsburg Park.

I walked for two hours and seventeen minutes and took 13,955 steps covering 6.92 miles.

Day 3: Friday

Having done over five hours of yardwork (cut the grass, trimmed shrubs etc.) I wasn’t going to take a walk, but felt guilty and did.

I stayed in Nazareth walking from my house to the HS, around the MS and back home. Despite being in town, I saw two deer on the quarry grounds adjacent to the MS, as it was dusk.

I walked for an hour and two minutes and covered 6,456 steps.

Day 4: Saturday

I went South on Saturday morning to the D & L Trail beginning at Farmersville I walked to the Route 33 Access point, and back.

It was a nice nature trail, reasonably wide most of the time as it did narrow on occasion. There were mostly people running and biking, but I had gotten there pretty early and there were few there for most of the time.

My walk was one hour and thirty eight minutes and I covered 4.79 miles taking 9,999 steps.

Day 5: Sunday

It was Easter Sunday and I decided to head to a very nearby trail right after sunrise.

I took the Tatamy Trail to Palmer Township and then to Hackett Park and back to my car in Tatamy.

The walk was 8.37 miles covering 16,725 steps in two hours and forty minutes.

Day 6: Monday

I was back in Bushkill Township beginning at Henry Woods Trailhead and walking through the various trails there and at Jacobsburg.

Some of the trails were a bit too ‘crowded’ for my pleasure as parents and children were there being it was a day off of school, but the other trails were nice and peaceful.

I walked for two hours and nineteen minutes covering 14,266 steps and 7.04 miles.

Summary

Each of these locations is within a fifteen minute drive of my home in Nazareth, PA. There is something for everyone. In town one can walk on sidewalks and visit the many parks. There are residential trails with paved walks. Nature trails that have crushed stone or mulch of some sort. And then hiking trails with rock, dirt, and packed down paths.

I knew they were out there, but I had no idea how many existed and how accessible they were. I guess we are fortunate to live in an area with so many opportunities to take in nature.

The only cost is your time and investment.

My investment for these trips was eleven hours and twenty-nine minutes covering thirty-three and two-thirds miles in 69,467 steps.

It was a good Spring Break!
