It was the week of January 20th. The Martin Luther King Holiday was Monday and we had off from school. We had three matches scheduled and our league tournament on Saturday. It was a busy week to say the least.
My focus remained on my health first. I think it is important and I’ve gotten much better at doing this, to keep focused on a few things you want to accomplish.
There are so many things we could be doing, which lead to distractions. It is easy to justify the importance or value of something in the moment, but this leads to a dispersion of attention and a lack of focus.
There are few individuals who are truly great at something, because they are willing to sacrifice nearly everything to accomplish their goals.
In reality, most people seek balance. This does require compromise, but it doesn’t mean mediocrity.
For our wrestlers, grades come first. If they don’t get good enough grades they can’t compete. We’d like wrestling to come second, but some have family or work obligations that have to take priority.
In hindsight, I’d probably make personal health and well-being first. This is the foundation for kids and adults alike. You simply can’t perform at anything well if you’re not physically and mentally prepared.
As a bonus, health and well-being are completely within your control.
I was continuing to monitor my vitals and was careful about my intake and activity. They were all working well together.
I started doing some free weights. These were circuits, a 20 minute workout. I had two routines and wanted to do each twice a week.
This worked for maybe a month and a half. I wasn’t motivated enough. I tried in the morning, the afternoon, cut some things out, but simply couldn’t get into it.
Not everything works, but at least I knew why. I wasn’t motivated. I didn’t care enough. I didn’t get enough satisfaction from it.
And that’s okay.
It didn’t change my focus or distract me from my goals, it was simply not the right way for me to reach my goal.
Don’t try too much, try one thing, see if you like it or don’t, assess its value, and then determine if you are going to continue it, modify it, or discontinue it.
Question for You
How do you prioritize when a lot is happening at the same time?
Lesson Learned
When a lot starts happening at once pull back and focus on the most important things that align with your goals and cut everything else out. See how it works, and determine what’s next.
