I was thinking about monuments in Middle-earth.
The Stone of Erech, the Stone of the Hapless, the colossal statues of Isildur and Anarien, and many burial mounds.
All man made.
It got me thinking about monuments by Elves.
I couldn’t think of any. The more I thought about it the more it made sense.
Elves had immortality and didn’t require monuments because they had memory.
Men memorialized with monuments because their lifespan was often less than 100 years and required them to preserve the memory of people and events for others to learn.
Elves relied more on song to recall a memory and men recorded history in writing to be passed along from generation to generation.
It is one additional difference between the Children of Illuvatar that I hadn’t considered before.
