The first step of problem solving is defining the actual problem. Not understanding the problem leads to underestimating the time, cost and complexity being faced.
When we first notice a problem our immediate reaction is to fix it quickly. This is our impulsive response.
How do we quickly fix it? We apply an old solution to a new problem.
This is a mistake made over and over.
To solve for it, you must first become deliberate. Define the problem and challenge the impulsive response.
Does the old solution fix the new problem? If not, why?
Can the problem be made smaller or in other words are there different parts of the problem that can be solved independent of one another?
Does a part of the problem to be solved require great effort to fix a small percent of the problem? Must that part be fixed at all?
Having a coach will help you understand the problem and its potential component parts so you can best solve the root problem with the most appropriate solution.
