Kincaid – Girl

By

Girl is flash fiction by Jamaica Kincaid comprised of one 400ish word sentence.

The Caribbean setting is indicated by calypso music and khaki clothing. The story is about a mother instructing her daughter how to behave and become a good woman.

It is a stream of instructions interrupted by the girl only a few times.

The diatribe of the mother demonstrates her beliefs and fears of life and for her daughter. It also exposes societal positions and roles in society.

It does a lot of work in one sentence, albeit, a rather long one.

I like the rambling interiority and find it to be fun as the reader assesses the reliability of the narrator.
