As the daytime has flipped and sunrise passes after seven a.m. and sunset precedes seven p.m. I remind myself to not regret the loss of daylight, but instead to embrace the changing of the seasons.
For some, this is their best opportunity to witness a sunrise, while for others the dread of going to work and returning home in darkness is not too far from being.
For me, I shift my routine slightly and begin to hunker down. I’ve got two more months of walking to work before the weather becomes a challenge. I love the nights in the forties and crisp mornings that wake me as much as the walk itself or the coffee I enjoy before or after.
The evenings come earlier, which means settling in, maybe reading more and eating earlier.
As I am back to work with the school year, my walking and hiking has changed to a mostly weekend based activity excepting my commute. In the summer I did this during the week to avoid crowds.
I always like to go out at dawn and try to catch the sunrise as I am walking along a river or on the ridge of a mountain. Soon the leaves will be changing in full and falling. Temperature changes, damp, dew, wet leaves, and slippery ground becomes more regular. A bit more caution and maybe even more awareness to surroundings is called for, or maybe that is me getting older and being more aware of this fact.
As I ready myself to move forward, I thought I’d look back and share some walking and hiking photos from the summer I particularly liked (you’ll notice lots of sunshine) as I say until next year to it:
